Wolf’s Pit

Race Cancelled

As I’m sure you are all aware, we have had to cancel this years race due to the corona virus outbreak. We have only had to cancel once before, due to snow, and lost over £800 in committed expenses. For this reason we put a notice on Fabian4 and the FRA website that refunds would not be available in the event of cancellation. As the notice was put in to cover our committed expenses we have arranged with Fabian4 to offer you the options below.

Bradda Dads are essentially a bunch of blokes that do things for our community, none of us gain materially from any of our fund-raising or events. We’ve organised dozens of fell races and look forward to welcoming you to races in the future, for now though, we hope we can rely on your understanding and generosity. Thank-you.

We are offering all entrants 2 options:

A/ Donate your entry fee to Bradda Dads. We will use your donation to put towards good causes in Bradwell such as the schools, supporting other village groups and organising village events such as the Bonfire or Pensioners Xmas lunch (details of our activities are on this web site). In this case no action is required and we thank you very much in anticipation.

B/ You can claim a refund minus committed costs. Unfortunately our committed costs equate to 72.8% of the £8 entry fee, so we are only able to offer a 27.2% refund, which equates to £2.18 per runner. The refund must be claimed before midnight on 31st March 2020. To claim this you need to access your Fabian4 entry details. If you no longer have the email that gives you access then re-request it from http://www.fabian4.co.uk/competitor/viewentry.aspx. Once on your entry details page, scroll down to the Cancellation Section at the bottom, and click the “Confirm Cancellation” button.>>.

Please email wolfspitfellrace@gmail.com if you would like to contact us.

Thanks to everyone for your support in 2019. It was a record turnout hence the slightly late start. Hope you enjoyed the variety of weather we had yesterday and hope to see you all again next year. The sheep were back in the field by 3pm and Malcolm’s no doubt wondering how he’s going to sort out the mud in the lambing tent.

2020 Event Overview

There has been a slight increase in the cost to £8 (for both pre-entry and EOD). For pre-entry, please go to Fabian4 entry for 2020.

This is a challenging Fell Race of 6 miles & 1500 ft of Ascent (9.2Km / 467m) taking in some of the best hills & moors of the Peak. The location is Malc’s Big Field, Townfield Lane, Shatton, Nr. Bamford, Hope Valley, S33 0BG (GR196825).

Parking is available free at the Hope Valley Garden Centre (thanks to Emma and the team – you could always pop in for a browse after the race or a relaxing cuppa in the cafe) and on Malc’s field (Malcolm Sowerby; the guy who each year, very kindly allows us to use his fields for parking, running, and registration in the big, white lambing tent). If the conditions are very wet, it may not be possible to park on the field  – in this case, please first go to the car park at Hope Valley Garden Centre. Please also be respectful of the Shatton residents and do not park anywhere in Shatton village.

On the day, we also have an under-8s fun run, the Accelerate Gritty Races (race 1) starting 10:15 / age 8+, and runners taking part in the Nottinghamshire 3AAA’s fell championship.

Let’s hope we don’t have a blizzard like in 2017!

wolfs pit route

Route Description

Start / Finish (GR195825): 2nd field on right off Townfield Lane. Run down the field onto Townfield Lane. Head down the lane and across the ford then turn right up Shatton Lane GR199824.  Marshals will direct you right through a gate off Shatton Lane and then right at the next gate  – this section is run on private land and it is where the uphill bit starts!rainbow

Head uphill towards the marshal and pass through the gate in the middle of the field. Immediately turn right and go along to the wall, then turn left and head uphill to the gate on Shatton Lane (CP1: GR194813). Turn right up to Shatton Mast and continue on the path towards Wolf’s Pit. Follow path around Abney Moor and bear left (off the main path) to a stile (GR201815). Continue to the crossroads of paths to the west of Smelting Hill. Follow the sign for Offerton and head across the Offerton Moor. Go through the metal gate, across Siney Sitch , and continue down Offerton Edge to the stile/gate to the west of Offerton Hall (CP2: 212810). Marshal will direct you left to follow the path via Old Clough to where the path re-joins Shatton Lane (GR202815).

Depending on the year, the marshal will either direct you up Shatton Lane towards the mast or right down Shatton Lane. If you are unlucky and head down Shatton Lane, at GR198817, you’ll be directed left off the lane and up through the fields to again meet Shatton Lane. Turn right up the lane towards the mast. At the same place where you met Shatton Lane after the first big climb, marshals will turn you left to go straight downhill. Pass through the gate in the middle field and continue to the bottom of the next field. Turn right through the gate and then left onto Shatton Lane. Turn left at the bottom, go over the ford, up Townfield Lane and finally a right turn into and up the field back to the finish.

General notes:

You MUST stick to the obvious footpath along Abney and Offerton Moors.

Do NOT cross any wall / fence at any point other than a designated access point / stile.

Sorry – its Lambing time absolutely no dogs on the course or start field please.

Land Access Notes

The local land owners have been extremely co-operative, working with us to allow access across open farm land en-route to the mast (the first big climb), and allowing access across Abney and Offerton Moor for the later parts of the course. (This access is granted for the duration of the race only; a TWO hour period 10:30 -12:30 hrs on the 29.03.20 – please do not abuse this privilege).

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the following for their cooperation in staging this race: Land Owners / Tenant Farmers / Shatton Residents / Hope Valley Garden centre.
